White Paint, Thrift Store Treasures & Saying Hello

It's the little things in life that are so wonderful!
Like taking a curbside castoff and (FINALLY!) transforming it into something useful and beautiful! I spent a bit this morning doing the first coat of white paint on an old window my husband picked up for me off the curb in our old city. Yes, I DID say my hubby did it! He was mortified the first few times I did it myself, but then he realized that trashpile treasures fit in nicely with his frugal nature! :D

While I was painting on a tarp in the driveway, a woman and her kids came by, walking their dog. I looked up and said, "Hello!", and a lovely conversation followed! Their family is new to the neighborhood and lives 1 street over. She asked about my fence, we talked about the elementary school, and how wonderfully friendly our neighborhood is!

I just love little conversations like this! I always choose to do projects in the front yard vs. the back yard, and love to spend more gardening/yard sprucing time out front than tucked away in back. And all for the simple reason of getting to know my neighbors! It's amazing how relationships form from being in the front garden and chatting with neighbors who are taking a walk or also working outside. I grew up in the country with no neighbors, and so I really cherish the opportunity to get to know the ones I have now!

I went running errands this afternoon, and decided to stop by the thrift store. I had seen a beautiful silverplate tray there last week and couldn't stop thinking about it. They still had it! I was really excited, especially when I saw this fun old baby bassinet for only $3!!

I think I'm going to use it to hold my girls' stuffed animals and doll babies!

I'm surrounded now by giggles, homework, and the jingle-jangle of Sadie's dog collar. Crazy noise to some, but to me, tonight, it's...wonderful!!!

Have a blessed evening,
Stacey

The Proverbs 31 Woman

Proverbs 31:10-31 ---

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.

Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.

She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.

She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.

She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.

She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls.

She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.

She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.

She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.

In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.

She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.

When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.

She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.

Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.

She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.

She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.

She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.

Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all."

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

So who is the Proverbs 31 woman, really? She is what all Christian women strive to be like--talk about a role model! But some women read this passage in discouragement, thinking of being like this woman as unattainable, unrealistic in today's society. Or they think, I don't spin my own yarn, what does this have to do with me today? Well, this Bible passage is timeless - as pertinent for this generation as it was 50 years ago or will be 50 years from today. It talks of a woman who one could think of as old-fashioned and modern at the same time!

The Proverbs 31 woman is an excellent role model for modern women. Her husband has total confidence and trust in her, and she gives him no reason to think otherwise. She is a strong and eager worker, not giving in to pure lazyness. She thinks of her families needs before her own, providing for them food and clothing with loving care. She will make a purchase thoughtfully, and uses her resources to purchase something that will also provide a need and income for her family (vineyard). This woman makes sure the household is cared for and clean, she is responsible. She opens her arms to those in need, loving those who need love. When trouble comes, she has no fears but places her trust in the Lord. She takes care of the appearance of her house, and takes care of her body and personal appearance. Her husband is not worried about the house or the family, knowing they are well cared for, and he is free to do his work. She makes extra money when needed to help with the family income (a working mom!). She doesn't worry about the future, but does plan for future needs--the Lord will provide. The words that come out of her mouth are kind and thoughtful, she instructs her children faithfully, and gives wise encouragement not speaking of gossip. Her children and husband think the world of her. Though there are many things the world thinks of as important in a woman such as figure size and charm, what truly matters to a family is a mother and wife who loves Jesus.

It is faith in Jesus that gives us the desire to do the above things, the desire to be a better wife, mom, family member & neighbor. And Jesus can also give us the ability to do said things when we pray to Him about this.

Nobody is perfect, but loving the Lord gives us the heart desire to do what is pleasing to Him. Goodness knows that I have issues to work on, and areas to improve upon. But God is leading my heart to follow the above example He gave us in the Bible so that I can be the woman He wants me to be. I believe that the Proverbs 31 woman, and Christian women like her, have a legacy that LASTS, one that impacts generations to come for Christ. There is NO greater legacy we could have in this life than to lead our children to Jesus, to serve where He calls, and do it with a joyful, humble heart!

May God bless you & yours today!

Stacey

ps--The quilt in the pic above was hand-pieced and hand-quilted by my husband's grandmother. She just recently passed away, but I believe she lovingly lived out the life of a Prov. 31 woman.

Front Porch Inspiration, Dumpster Diving, and Giveaway Reminder

It's time for a front porch makeover, y'all! My porch, not these lovelies, these pics are my inspiration...my muse! Hee, hee! Here in my very old, small southern town are a street of houses that have been brought back to life over the years by the residents who live there. And I want to live there, too! I have no idea what the insides look like, but if they're anything like the darling outsides, count me in! :)
Here you'll find tin roofs, wrap-around porches, vintage porch furniture, ferns, and lots of sink-into, come & visit, & have a sweet tea kind of seating. I love it!

This one has the largest wrap-around porch, and black wicker furniture with a cream & black toile that's just yummers!

And the home below has to be just about the cutest thing I ever did see! I sigh a sigh of contentment every time I see it. I actually take a purposefully little long-cut on the way home from the grocery store so that I can drive down this adorable street. This home has the most fabulous cottage garden in front. (All the houses on the street have gorgeous blue hydrangeas, just stopped blooming)

White picket fence with a cottagey perennial garden.

A brick path leads to the front door.

And now, here's my porch below. It's a newer house, but I'm trying to incorporate some charm. I have black rocking chairs, and little table between, and black pots with what was a gorgeous arrangement for early summer, but which alas had fizzled out. I bought some lovely wax begonias and potato vine, because I need plants to tolerate intense sun and heat (no pretty ferns for this porch, sadly).

I'm working on a new arrangement to hang on the front door, and bought this cream & black Waverly toile fabric at JoAnn's today to do some seat cushion mistreatments on. I'll add some cute vintagey touches, without it being too much, since the house has a traditional feel, plant my pots, and hopefully have some pics to show to you in a day or few!

Now, for the Dumpster Diving story! I live in a neighborhood with lots of new development going on. Just a few houses up the street (and down as well) they are doing interior work now, getting cabinets and flooring in place. And while driving my kids to school yesterday morning, I saw some wood sticking out of the large, red dumpster next to the house. I thought there might be some good scraps in there for little projects, but I had no idea!

I was a little embarrassed when I went back because my neighbor saw me and waved ;), but I told myself that maybe a treasure was to be found, and boy-oh-boy was I right! LOTS of long lengths of brand new crown moulding, chair rail molding, quarter-round just tossed in the dumpster and ready for the landfill!!! I couldn't believe it! You'd better believe I was embarrassed no more when I saw visions of crown moulding in my powder room, and the laundry room given a cute extra tall chair rail! FOR FREE, PEOPLE!!!

I got a few looks when driving the couple houses back towards home because the moldings were so long they went from the dashboard to several feet sticking out the back window of my suv. Better believe I stashed those babies in the garage right-quick-and-in-a-hurry! (For those of you readers who are horrified by said story, I did ask the construction guy first, and I didn't actually have to dive in the dumpster, I was standing on my tippy-toes!) Yippee for literal trash-to-treasure!!!

Lastly, don't forget to go to yesterday's post "Pass It Forward" to sign up by leaving a comment ONLY ON THAT POST for a FREE GIVEAWAY!!! It's gonna be a good one! You'll be soooorrry if you miss out! :)

Don't miss out on all the....
