Vintage Rules!!

Today The Blessed Nest is Going:

Since several of you were asking me about the blue cabinet in my master bedroom (in pic below), and were wanting to know more about it, and where do I find my fun antique pieces, I thought I'd share some of my "wisdom" for getting your own "fun finds"!

Here are my "Rules For Finding and Using Antique/Vintage Pieces":

You can find them almost anywhere! From flea markets, to fun little shops, to a relative's attic, to a garage sale, to a thrift store, to the curb next to the trash can! If you are interested in adding some character to your home, and are drawn to antiques or a fun flea look, then have fun & shop around!!

The more you get lookin' & shoppin' the better off you'll be because you'll know:

What to look for. You'll start knowing when things are priced about right, too high, or when you're getting a great deal! (Thrift stores & garage/estate sales often have the lowest prices. Antiques stores & shops are often highest, I think. But know your stuff! Sometimes these shops can yield more unique items & sometimes for a great price!!)

If getting the "real deal" vs. a reproduction is important to you, you'll also start to recognize the difference, and the quality of items as well.

Don't be too quick to judge! A piece that most people might pass by could end up with a fabulous new life in your home! We bloggers all know what a good can of spray paint can do! If you're drawn to an item, see what you could do with it! Maybe you won't use it for it's original purpose at all, but it could look great and function well for you given a new role! I have lots of pieces that I've "re-purposed" and given a new job in my home.

Everyone loves the small little things that you can find when junking: old doorknobs, silverware, books, transferware, and even tinier bits & baubles! And they are certainly fun to add to your decor (and often inexpensive enough for most of use to buy!). But to make more of an impact, I would encourage you to:

Choose Statement Pieces! A statement piece is a larger piece that really becomes a focal point of a room or a wall or maybe just a vignette. These items are NOTICED and can really "make" a room!! (Like the giant chalkboard in an antique frame in my kitchen--pic down below) (or the blue cabinet in my bedroom)
These are pieces that you LOVE, and I guarantee you'll gain a bigger and better impact for your space with a statement piece than you will with lots of cluttery tiny things.

Where's it gonna go?? Some people say that if you love an item you should get it, even if you don't know where you'll put it. I say, that's a sure way for it to end up in the garage!

Think about where it could go in your home. You don't have to have a specific decision right there at the garage sale :), but the truly best pieces are ones: that look great alone or in groupings, & can work in various rooms of your home in various ways!
(For example: a great old dresser could be an entry table, a dining room buffet, or actually be used in a bedroom as intended!)

Choose items based on what YOU LOVE, not what is "in". Just because everyone is going gaga for a certain item in all of the blogs and shelter magazines doesn't mean that you have to love it too!

Think about YOUR style, what works for YOUR family, and what YOU LOVE and go with that! In addition, don't be worried about what anyone else will think of an item if YOU love it!

Around 8 years ago or so, I bought a really cool bench made from an old door. I LOVED it!!! It was going out of my decorating comfort zone at the time, with all of the chippy deep faded pink and cream paint, but I had to have it! I placed it in my home's entry, and every one of my friends wanted to know "when are you going to paint it?"!! They were shocked when I said I was leaving it as is, but NOW they all love it and want to know where I've placed that piece every time we move!! :)

Actually use and love your fun finds!! The best way to enjoy your new find is to use it! Give it a fun new purpose and enjoy (like my Pepsi crate turned garden magazine holder!)! And then take a picture and blog about it so the rest of us can see too :)!!

ps-- I got the blue cabinet at a local antiques store. I don't think that the paint is original, it's been painted over several times. The glass in the door does look old with it's bubbles! I can use it in lots of ways in lots of rooms, and I LOVE it! :)

Birdcage, Industrial Style!

I love to go to flea markets and fun antiques shops! And, I'll admit, I also "dumpster dive" or nab "curbside castoffs" from time to time! Any junker worth her stuff will do what is necessary to get the good junk!!

One of the things that I find when out flea-ing are these old industrial light covers. They would cover a lightbulb to protect it from breakage. Well, I am drawn to these little guys for several reasons.....neutral color, great form and lines, and fun stuff you can do with them!!

Like turn one into a "birdcage"!! That's what they remind me of sometimes! :)
I have this cutie-patootie on my sunroom "potting bench".
Isn't this fun??!!!

Don't you just wish you had one too?!! :)

The Big Sunroom Makeover Reveal!

Whooo-hoo!!! Today's the "Big Reveal" for the Sunroom Makeover!

Above is the before pic, and below are LOTS of afters!! :)
(And I'm apologizing for the icky quality of the pics, it's just so overcast outside!)

"After...." (click on pics to enlarge, if you wish :)
Hubby lovingly painted the sunroom in Duron's Tobacco Road.
I had heard so many amazing things about it from Nester and others on the web, that I had to try it out! I'll admit that I freaked out at first, then wondered if I should go down a step to Plantation Beige, but now we really love it!

The new white slipcovers, yea!
And pillows that I made myself!!

Y'all were so interested in my antique French key, I added some more pics! It is the key to my "secret garden"!! This is my "garden room" after all!! :)

It's hanging from an old scale!!

My newly spray-painted barn star!!

I love chalkboards, and these are some of my favorites!
The "menu" one below I got from JunkMarket tour at the Kane County Flea Market several years ago!
The menu hasn't changed in a couple years, it reminds me of the outdoor movie festivals we would host each year!!

My floral frog collection :)
The pillow fronts are the most gorgeous Martha Stewart Signature fabric. I got this as a remnant at a fabric store. There wasn't enough for the pillows, so I got some complementary sagey-mossy green fabric for the backs. It matches the "leaf" color in the fabric fronts, and also matches the distressed painted color of the coffee table and sisal rug border!

Look how the white is crisply set off by the rich neutral Tobacco Road paint color!

Sadie likes her "new room"! :) LOL

( We really wanted to put up bamboo roman shades as well, if you remember, but our windows would require a special order width, and since we plan to sell the house this year we decided to put that on hold. Painting was a LOT cheaper! )

I really hope that y'all like the makeover! We are enjoying it so much!!
Thanks for visiting :), leave me a little comment to say "hello"!!!

Junk Trip - Day 3 - Buffalo, MN

We left our hotel on Day 3, and headed to Buffalo, MN for a fun-filled day of shopping! So many of these stores weren't originally open on that day, but were kind enough to open just for the Red Shed Girls! All of them also had yummy scones, pastries, cookies, cider, wine& cheese, & water bottles to keep our energy up as we shopped -- how sweet! Thanks everyone!!
Our 1st stop was at a great junkin' store called Sweet Salvage. Notice all the cool junk nailed around the store sign! The prices were great, and we all found some incredible stuff here. If only I lived closer...! I got a pair of old claw feet I'll use as bookends, a chair back that'll be angel wings in a project, and a too cool wire basket that I'm making a chandie out of (inspired by the cool ones at the Junk Bonanza that were snatched up oh-so-fast!).
The girls start loading on to the truck (TX girls got the use of a truck to haul back their goodies--lucky ducks! Good thing there was a shipping place across the street from the hotel for me!)
Next, we went to Second Hand Rose and This & That. 2 fun shops that, again, opened for us!
The owners of Second Hand Rose were just so sweet, and great finds were scored in here! Christy got the coolest old carnival game wheel, and the Red Shed got a FREE -- yes, FREE -- vintage red refridgerator that they'll use for displays!
We even got a free gift just for coming by the shop! How sweet is that?!

Next we headed to downtown Buffalo, MN. A cute couple block area of shops and deli's. Everyone was so NICE, they call it "Minnesota Nice"! You wouldn't even believe how kind everyone was! All the shops had signs to greet us, and goodies to eat, and some even changed the entire store front display to a western TX theme in honor of the Red Shed Girls! If you're in the Minneapolis area, I HIGHLY recommend you take a day to swing by Buffalo!
Yesterday's Charm was a darling spot, and I got a couple cute things here as well. Several of the girls were squealing with delight over the old gear molds that they found here, too! I may have to call in about that!

Barn Chix was holding this amazing entryway bench for the Red Shed that they found on their scouting out the area trip! Click on the pic to enlarge.

This cool old barn was transformed into Buffalo Nickel antiques. It was huge, and there's so much to see there!
After a fun day of shopping, we went to Axels for dinner, and the group had the biggest onion rings I've ever seen! We ordered so many, that we decided to share with the people at the bar area! Some of the old men wondered who in the group was single - hehe! :)
Here's my purchases for today:

(I only laid out one plate & cup, but I bought a whole set, including saucers too)
That night we had a pj party (although only half of us wore pj's -- I did though, and brought a comfy-cozy blanket too!) and we had sooo much fun talking and laughing! Ki came to join us and we had the best time! She is such a blast, and was kind enough to bring her latest book "Junk Beautiful" to sign for everyone!
Hanging, talking & talking, and drinking some wine! :)
I also brought 3 vintage word flashcards that say "we went everywhere" to have the group sign as a reminder of this special trip! (I think Ki's holding them on her lap in the above pic!)
A late night shot of me & Ki!
This day was SOOO much fun, and I'm so glad that y'all are able to "re-live" this trip with me! Tomm. will be the last post on the Junk Trip! Come back to see what cool stuff I got then!!
Blessings,
Stacey
ps--we had a stomach bug hit a couple ladies on the trip :(, guess who came down with it last night?! Please pray my kids don't get it!!
